Encouraging Student Attendance

Encouraging Student Attendance

  • Creating a framework for competency courses

  • Learning platform redesign

OVERVIEW

Improving student attendance and optimising the overall learning experience

The non-public high school in Poland encountered a growing demand for competency courses as the number of applicants increased. However, the school expressed dissatisfaction with the attendance rate of students in these courses.

As a solution, our team designed a course enrolment feature and integrated it into school's learning platform. This initiative aimed to provide students an information about each course, allowing them to make informed decisions when selecting their desired courses.

HOW MIGHT WE…

How can we help students to choose competency courses consciously and feel more responsible after enrolling?

SOLUTION

Supportive and engaging learning environment

By providing students with the necessary details and a user-friendly interface, we aimed to enhance their ability to choose wisely and optimize their learning experience.

We also implemented a rewarding system to motivate and encourage students to participate in their chosen courses. Students who attended classes will get badges, which will appear on a ‘learning results page’.

  • last around 2 hours, once or twice a week, after 15:00

  • different topics are not connected in modules

  • taught by teachers, guest lecturers, parents, students

How does enrolling process look like?

  • communication takes plase in the Slack chanel #competencycourses

USER RESEARCH

Why students tend to skip competency courses?

We conducted 5 interviews with students and used the cultural probes technique as part of our research methodology. This approach allowed us to gain valuable insights into the students' perspectives, experiences, and cultural influences related to attending classes.

Cultural probes

five-day diary study, one task per day, five students, focused on:

  • a general approach to education

  • competency courses’ place in school life

  • a connection between motivation and priorities

REFLECTIONS

What I would do if I had more time

  • Feature to register own course:

would allow students to propose and register their own competency courses. Offering an opportunity to design courses aligned with student’s interests would boost attendance and foster a sense of creativity and innovation among the students.

  • A course rating system:

would allow students who have completed a course to provide feedback and rate their learning experience.
